The 2013 Cultural Bridges Conference in the UK

The 2013 Cultural Bridges Conference in the UK
“State Multiculturalism: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of Political, Economic, and, Cultural Dimensions”
    “(London, March 20th - 22nd, 2013)
ICD - Academy for cultural diplomacy | The 2013 Cultural Bridges Conference in the UK

The process of globalization is consistently increasing the speed of the development of multicultural societies, and multiculturalism itself is becoming the way of the contemporary world. Many countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, the USA, Australia, and Canada are constantly engaging with active multiculturalism policies which are continually being amended and reinvented.

The pattern and process of multiculturalism is in fact transforming and increasing following economic, social, and political changes in an interdependent and globalized world. It is therefore essential that governments do not negate from the need to integrate their minority populations, while accepting and accommodating for diversity through policies that ensure better and sustained cultural cohesion. Considering multiculturalism within a European framework, the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy believes that reforms in the fields of migration, social affairs, and education are required to fully address the pressing issues of integration and accommodation. However, it also acknowledges the various obstacles that hinder this course.

The 2013 Cultural Bridges in the UK Conference will therefore offer a wide diversity of perspectives on the issue of intercultural relations internationally, with a particular focus on the UK. The conference will create and provide a proposal document that will be presented to the international community on how to overcome multicultural challenges. In addition, the proposal document will offer best practices to achieve a successful and harmonic multicultural society. The conference will also examine in-depth varying examples and best practices of Cultural Diplomacy that might be applied in a different context.

The conference will focus in particular on the following issues:

London is a leading global city with a diverse multicultural population, and is therefore the perfect location for the 2013 Cultural Bridges Conference in the UK. As the fabric of global culture is changing due to increasing movements of populations over borders, the objective of the “Cultural Bridges in the UK 2013 Conference” is to invoke a full academic interdisciplinary discussion on multiculturalism and the function Cultural Diplomacy plays in uniting multicultural societies. The discussion will include the potential for intercultural dialogue through the use of Cultural Diplomacy practices, and how smart power strategies can be used effectively to form constructive integration and accommodation policies to ascertain the framework for multicultural communities worldwide.

    Conference Speakers
Speakers during the Conference will include leading figures and experts from international politics, economics, academia, diplomacy, civil society, and the private sector. The speakers will also include a number of individuals from the ICD Advisory Board.

    Conference Participants
Participation in the conference is open to governmental & diplomatic officials, academics & scholars, economists, journalists, artists, civil society practitioners, private sector representatives, young professionals, and students, as well as other interested individuals from across the world.

MA in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy

MA in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy: Babes-Bolyai University (BBU) in cooperation with the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD)

(Fall Semester- Berlin, October 2nd, 2013)

      Where: Germany: Berlin; Romania: Cluj-Napoca

      When: Year Round

Next Program Start: Fall Semester: October 2nd 2013

      Overview:
International careers increasingly require knowledge and skills that transcend the confines of traditional academic disciplines. The contemporary world is strongly characterized by parallel processes of globalization and integration. These processes pervade almost all areas of human activity, and the issues that foreign policy makers address at the highest levels increasingly affect the ordinary lives of people around the world. Nation states are no longer capable of resolving certain issues single-handedly, whether they be international terrorism, global (and often national) financial crises, or climate change. Moreover, the emergence of asymmetrical security threats and the international convergence of social, political and economic relations, have underlined the need for a renewed focus on diplomatic relations and soft power, of which cultural diplomacy is a crucial component.

Operating under a joint partnership, Babes-Bolyai University and the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy are the first institutions to offer a Master of Arts degree program that will educate students from around the world in several academic disciplines related to International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy.

The Key Objectives of the program are:
ӢTo provide students with an in depth understanding of the theory and practice of international relations within the contemporary interdependent world placing a particular emphasis on cultural diplomacy within this framework
ӢTo educate students about cultural diplomacy within the context of the political, economic and cultural pillars upon which sustainable international relations are based.
”¢To analyze soft power and hard power strategies within the international relations discourse in the recognition that each element is mutually important and compatible in what Prof. Joseph Nye has characterized as “smart power.”

      Program Overview & Structure:
The Master‘s program follows the structure of a 4 semesters´ program- the curriculum is divided into four different semesters. However, the curriculum has been built in such a way that students are able to condense their studies into a period of 13-15 months should they wish. This is particularly useful to students with other commitments, whether professional or otherwise. Students are offered an array of optional courses to accompany the mandatory courses, professional experience opportunities and the final thesis. The first semester in Berlin will consist of three mandatory courses and two elective courses. During the second semester, students will undertake two elective courses as well as a professional development and training program at the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin, where each student will apply in practice what they learned in theory in the first semester. The third semester will take place on the campus of BBU in Cluj, Romania, and will consist of three mandatory courses and two elective courses. During the fourth semester students will undertake three workshops and produce a final thesis on a related topic of their choice.

      Benefits:
ӢThe program offers students a core curriculum of International Relations, which will prepare the student for a vast array of career opportunities across the world.
ӢStudents will have access to an expert faculty with experience in international politics and diplomacy, and will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to work in a complex global order.
ӢStudents will obtain an expertise in cultural diplomacy which is currently a rare yet rapidly increasing and important field within the public sector, private sector and civil society.
ӢStudents of this program will be significantly advantaged in the political arena against students who simply obtain an MA in international relations.
”¢During the “Professional Training” semester of the MA students will be able to create and implement their own programs and Initiatives.
ӢGraduates will discover that the curriculum and faculty prepare them for evolving careers in academia and all public and private international sectors

Program Cost: Tuition for the program is €12,000 (€3,000 per semester).

The e-Learning Course on Cultural Diplomacy in the USA

The e-Learning Course on Cultural Diplomacy in the USA
                  (March 4th - 29th, 2013 or April 1st - 26th, 2013)
                  Overview:
The e-Learning Course in Cultural Diplomacy in the USA offers a curriculum exploring the role of the United States on the global stage and the importance of Cultural Diplomacy in promoting and maintaining amicable relations with other nations. In an increasingly globalized world, the future role of the US is under question, and this e-Learning Course will explore and analyze the ways in which this traditional “superpower” will have to adapt if it is to remain competitive in light of the increasing economic and political power of the four BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, China, and India. As these countries grow in economic strength, it is imperative that the United States promote fruitful international relations so as to establish a positive framework in which to negotiate and cooperate with developing economic powers. Cultural Diplomacy will be a key tool in establishing this framework, providing a peaceful and enriching vehicle for the creation of a mutual understanding. The key objective of the program is thus to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the potential international issues facing the USA, and the manner in which Cultural Diplomacy can be used in order to prevent disagreements and promote cooperation and harmony at a time when the position of the United States as the dominant global power is under greater threat than ever before.

Students will have access to the innovative research and publications in the field and a distinguished and renowned faculty with wide-ranging experience in international diplomacy, academia, and all public and private international sectors. In addition to obtaining an expertise in Cultural Diplomacy, students will be uniquely situated to create and implement their own programs of Cultural Diplomacy with the support of the ICD and the ICD partners.

                  Program Curriculum & Structure:
The courses have been designed in a flexible way to allow students to structure their instruction around their own schedules. Students will be required to do weekly readings and view lectures via the website; however, students can pace themselves according to their preferences. A final paper will be required, upon which the course grade will be based.

The program includes the following components:
Video lectures which students can watch at their convenience
                  Reading material relevant to the course‘s different modules;
                  Online mentoring and assessments;
Final Paper to be completed within 90 days from the end of the course

The courses will be delivered via the e-learning platform module, a pedagogical tool designed to help participants meet the course's learning objectives through a self-paced study routine supported by multimedia, required and optional readings and a wealth of other information. The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy & Human Rights

The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy & Human Rights
"Towards a Global Human Rights Culture: The Need for a Collective Alliance in the Protection & Promotion of Human Rights"
                    (Berlin, May 26th - June 2nd, 2013)

Since its earliest inception, Human Rights have increasingly been considered to form part of what is now seen as universal law. The creation of the United Nations in 1945 subsequently provided an international regulatory framework for dialogue on Human Rights in the global sphere. Despite a global governing set of laws set forth by the formation of the UN, the international community still lacks a cohesive implementation and engagement strategy in the enforcement of Human Rights.

The conference will therefore provide the platform for activists, experts, academics and world leaders involved in the field of Human Rights to come together, create alliances, and better coordinate their activities, thus promoting better implementation and enforcement of Human Rights in a more effective nature.

The conference will furthermore engage Cultural Diplomacy as a means of uniting the varying sectors of society in order to create a joint collaboration for the protection and support of Human Rights activities, as well as recognize the capabilities of Cultural Diplomacy in enabling governments to fulfill Human Rights obligations towards their citizens.

                    Symposium Participants »
Participation in the conference is open to governmental & diplomatic officials, academics, artists, journalists, civil society practitioners, private sector representatives, young professionals and students as well as other interested individuals from across the world.

                    Symposium Agenda »
The conference will bring civil society and academics practitioners together with world leaders with the intention of creating global alliances and platforms for dialogue. This major assembly of Human Rights activists and experts will create a cohesive coalition of supporters with the aim of strengthening current policies while initiating new proposals in the Human Rights arena. The simultaneous sessions of the Congress will provide a unique opportunity for those involved in the field to come together and discuss contemporary obstacles and needed revisions, work collectively as a single entity, and ultimately propose alternative solutions to current impediments.

                    Participant Papers »
The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy encourages academic research and analysis of issues related to the goals of the Conference. The ICD would therefore like to welcome the participants of the conference to submit a paper they would like to be considered for presentation at the Conference as well as being included in the proposal document that will be issued following the Conference and will be sent to all governments and leaders of the international community worldwide.

The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in the Levant
"Levant, Cradle of Cultural Diplomacy: Rediscovering the Mediterranean"
The Conference is Co-organized and Co-hosted by the Government of Romania, the Romanian Senate, the Romanian Cultural Institute, the University of Bucharest, the Romanian Foundation for Democracy
                      (Bucharest, May 23rd - 25th, 2013)

The Levant is the crossroads of Western Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean and Northeast Africa; As such, its countries occupy a region of geographic and cultural significance. Individual countries in the Levant are interdependent and interconnected to the extent that they share both overlapping cultures and natural resources. However, the area is still prone to conflicts, which threaten the immense potential of the region as a whole. These disputes traditionally arise out of a plethora of cultural, political, religious, and economic differences across the region. The successful and long-term growth of each country depends on the stability of the region as a whole, for which de-escalation of disputes and reliable cooperation between states is paramount.

This requires a creative approach which recognises the history behind current conflicts and seeks to provide contemporary solutions. Given the region‘s diversity of cultural identity and historical cultural significance, Cultural Diplomacy should be taken into account as a force to effect change.

                      Conference Location
Based in Bucharest, the conference will be hosted at a number of important political, historic, and cultural locations across the city.

The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in the Asia Pacific
"South Pacific Relations: The Application of Cultural Diplomacy in Fostering Australasian Relations"
                        (Berlin; May 17th - 20th, 2013)

                        Symposium Overview
With the ever increasing significance of successful global and regional governance, the 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in the Asia Pacific will focus on the challenges and opportunities that the South Pacific region faces as a potential regional power in the international community. In recognition of Australia‘s role as a key power in the region, the conference will focus on how Australia, working in partnership with others in the region, can facilitate stable, cooperative initiatives in tackling the key challenges present in the area. Many of the Pacific islands are currently encountering several obstacles, such as underdevelopment, mismanagement of natural resources, lack of economic integration, and state instability, with the main challenges hindering successful Australasian relations requiring a deeper understanding and prompt action. Improving regional integration and cooperation would bring about vital benefits to the locality, such as increasing national and regional competitiveness, improving the quality of governance in the South Pacific region, and helping to achieve a convergence of key regulatory measures to ensure the promotion of interests and prosperity in the region.

                        Symposium Agenda
The overall aim of The International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in Australia will be to build on the close historic, economic, political, and geographic links that bind the countries in the South Pacific and encourage inter-disciplinary, cross-cultural discussions on salient issues in this region, thus promoting a greater understanding across national borders, while creating a unique international platform for developing the opportunities for cooperation in this region.

The Conference will focus in particular on the following areas:
                        Trade and Investment
                        Economic Development
                        Regional Security and Stability
                        Cultural and Indigenous Rights
                        Health and Social Challenges
Sustainable Development, Environmental Responsibility, and Climate Change
                        Ocean & Fisheries Management

                        Participant Papers
The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy encourages academic research and analysis of issues related to the goals of the International Symposia on Cultural Diplomacy 2013, and would therefore like to welcome conference participants to submit a paper they would like to be considered for presentation at the symposium. Certificate of Attendance

This unprecedented gathering will seek to highlight Africa´s self-attained achievements with regards to its standing in the international community as well as it´s increasing emancipation from the often assumed dependency on the Western world. The focus will be on the role and successes of the African Union as an intergovernmental regional organization seeking to combat political, social and economic inequalities. Past achievements will be considered while simultaneously accenting the future challenges the AU faces.

Multidimensional in focus, the conference will revolve around three main themes. Beginning with ´the rise of corporate Africa´, the positive impact of enterprise on development throughout the continent will be accented. The following theme, ´African solutions for African challenges (human development)´ will be dedicated to the overlapping issues of education, the eradication of poverty and the empowerment of women. The final topic ´community development through arts, culture and sports´ will exemplify the power exerted by cultural diplomacy on the furthering of community development.

It will be demonstrated that the application of cultural diplomacy is pervasive within the African Union´s activities, as it has charged itself with the task of uniting highly differentiated cultures within Africa with the aim of achieving ´greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and the peoples of Africa´. Cultural Diplomacy will be shown to support and solidify such efforts.
